Gosport Bastion No.1

Protecting the past for the future

Welcome to Friends of Bastion No.1 – a volunteer-led group dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting this historic scheduled monument for future generations since 2018. Join us in supporting and safeguarding Gosport’s heritage.

Friends of Bastion No.1 is a voluntary, non-political, not-for-profit group formed in 2018 in Gosport, Hampshire. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and promote Bastion No.1, a nationally important Scheduled Monument that forms part of Gosport’s historic military defences, called ‘The Gosport Lines’. As local volunteers with a shared passion for heritage, we are committed to ensuring that this unique site remains a valued and accessible part of the community.

Our current activities include conservation work, site maintenance, historical research, and public engagement. We run annual open days, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the Bastion and learn more about its role in the nation’s coastal defences. We also collaborate with local schools, heritage groups, and community organisations to raise awareness and celebrate Gosport’s rich military history. We are actively working to improve the site’s visibility and understanding through interpretive signage, digital media, and community events.

Our volunteers also engage in ongoing efforts to monitor the condition of the structure and support efforts to secure funding for its restoration and preservation. There are many ways you can get involved. Whether you are a history enthusiast, keen gardener, skilled tradesperson, or simply someone who wants to support a good cause, we welcome new members and volunteers. You can join one of our working parties, help with event planning, lend a hand on open days, or support us through donations and spreading the word.

Together, we can ensure Bastion No.1 remains a proud part of Gosport’s landscape and story. Visit us, volunteer with us, or follow us online to find out more – and be part of protecting our past for the future.
